Brake Piston Material

When buying a pair of brake calipers for your race car you may have a choice of piston material. Generally it is either titanium or stainless steel. Certainly titanium is the sexiest and does offer some advantages in heat transfer properties. However this may come at a price. Titanium is much harder than the bores the piston rides in. Therefore they can scour the piston bores. The only repair is to have the bores bushed back to the proper sixe. An expensive and not always practical solution.

Stainless steel, while not quite as good heat transfer wise is not nearly as rough on the bores. Just be sure that you specify a heat shield on the piston.
